The Australian workforce has changed dramatically in 2020. WFH has become the norm, and it’s looking as if there’s going to be a lot more of that in the future too. It’s the first time in the nation’s history that we’ve had to stop and re-assess what it means to ‘work’, and the locations required to get said work done effectively.

WFH may sound great, but the reality is with such short notice, many Australian homes weren’t and still aren’t equipped with the right equipment for thriving work spaces, not to mention the added number of household inhabitants that were usually co-inhabiting the limited spaces on offer. You’ve got kids doing Zoom classes, couples moving to different rooms to… “participate” in meetings, and generally not enough proper desk space with adequate lighting. It’s a recipe for workplace disaster.

The future of remote work

Prior to the restrictions only 15% of Australians were allowed to work from home full time. But it’s predicted that even after the restrictions have lifted, many businesses will allow remote work for many, if not most, of their employees. It’s estimated that 3 in 10 Australian jobs can be done remotely, and 41% of surveyed workers will continue to work from home after the restrictions lift.

Yep, the old workplace fridge just got a lot more space. There’s good reasons WFH is having its renaissance. It allows parents more time with their children, there’s no time wasted on commuting and it allows people to tackle their work in the morning when their minds are the sharpest, with one study showing a 13% increase in performance when employees work from home.

We sought to design an easy-to-build AND un-build work-from-home desk for no matter what your home office looks like, how unplanned the day plays out, or whether you had to work from home last minute.

If your partner, roommate or child needs the room you’re in, the WFH desk is lightweight, and easily disassembled so you can simply claim a new room of the home to work within (so long as there’s not a group Pilates class going on).

Some other nifty features include storage hooks for bags or umbrellas, cable management at the rear of the workbench to keep things tidy, and an antimicrobial work top to keep the baddies at bay.
